REALLY Cool Magic Bubbles!

Today we made Magic Bubbles in our Messy Fun Camp.

These bubbles are really cool because when you pop them, you get a puff of smoke!

I found the directions for creating these bubbles at Familicious.  The bubbles aren't really filled with smoke but contain the condensation of water vapor that is created when dry ice (carbon dioxide) sublimates (turns from solid to gas) when warm water is added to it.

Magic Bubble Maker
Following Familicious' directions, I made a "bubble machine" by putting a hole in a large plastic bottle.  I fed a piece of hose through the hole and then attached the cut end to a funnel.  I used duck tape to seal the area around the hole (I didn't seal it well enough initially and there were leaks around the lid and hose). The dry ice (in the box in this picture) was put in the bottom of the jar. I then poured hot water into the jar and quickly put on the cover. I put the funnel end (where "steam" was coming out) into a tray filled with bubbles. The funnel then "blew" really big bubbles.

Adding hot water to the dry ice that was in the jar.

I am dipping the funnel into the bubble solution.
The bubbles were actually much cooler than they look in the pictures.  My photographer didn't get pictures of any of the bubbles as the floated before they were popped :)
This is a picture taken right after a bubble popped.

The kids loved popping the bubbles.  I will definitely do this again!
