Breakfast in Bed for Mommy … on a very special plate!

My little ones are so excited about the simple plates that they made for Mother's Day this year.  I bought ceramic salad plates at the Christmas Tree Shop for $1 and the kids drew pictures of their Mom on the plates with permanent markers. I followed Heidi from HeidiSongs' idea of drawing a circle for the head and somewhat followed her directions for a guided drawing of Mom.  I then put the plates in a cold oven and turned the heat up to 350 degrees. After about 40 minutes, I turned off the oven and let the plates cool in the oven.  Some of the colors did change a little (several got lighter, and a few got darker).  Although the design seems to be permanent I did write "Hand Wash Only" on the bottom of each plate. We will be making muffins later this week and then send them home with the plate, a napkin and a tea bag so that the kids can present their Moms with breakfast in bed.

There are lots of other Mother's Day Ideas here and here and here.

  6. Can any permanent markers be used or does it have to be Sharpie brand?

    1. I did not use a special Sharpie. I do think that most of the markers the kids used were Sharpie brand. As I said, some colors got darker and some lighter. It might be a good idea to test the markers on a plate (that is then baked) before giving them to the kids. Thanks for commenting, :)

  8. Great idea!! Just wondering about the hand washing though- did the design hold up when the plates were washed? Im assuming the 40 minutes in the oven "cemented" the pictures?

    Thanks:)

  9. EPIC FAIL! So disappointed! Used Sharpie brand markers and followed your directions for baking. All of the colors faded and changed color. It could have been the finish on the plates, I suppose. I got them at Dollar Tree. Anyone else have this problem?

    1. I'm so sorry they didn't work out. I did it again this year and I did have some colors change again but they are still adorable and the kids love them.

  10. When heating plates, do you put them on top of something (cookie sheet?) or just on the rack?

  11. How sweet idea!! This idea of breakfast for mom is quite interesting!! I will definitely suggest this idea to my Phoenix preschool colleagues. By this way we can teach very special things to the kids!

  12. Thanks for the idea:) These worked out awesome. I bought my $1.25 ceramic plates from The Dollar Store. We used Sharpie Brand permanent markers. Started in a cool oven and cooked for 40min at 350, then let cool in the oven. No cracking and no colors faded:)
Kids and I are really excited to send these home to moms. Thank-you
